Can I get a companion for my cat who has feline herpes?

I have a seven month old cat that I found out just after adoption has feline herpes and also had an eye infection. He still ran around and played and ate normally. He was given eye drops for his eye infection and Interferon for a few months. He also eats Lysine treats every day. The only symptoms I've ever noticed is slight congestion but he's never had a problem with being active or eating normally. So my question is, can I safely adopt a companion for my cat even though he has feline herpes? Are there any precautions I would need to take? Thank you.
