My 9 week old kitten has feline herpes - treatment?

I have a cat with allergies which is very similar. His nose also gets very crusty, scabby, and dry. I read somewhere that a little dab of vaseline will help him and that it's safe in case he licks it off. When his nose gets bad, I clean it with a damp napkin or cotton ball, being careful not to rip the skin [which has happened] and then rub a little dab of vaseline on his nose to keep it moist. It seems to work and doesn't bug him too much.
