Getting started with xbox live?

i have a xbox that allows me to play burnt games and i was told i can play on live if i use the real games and as long as my xbox hasn't already been banned. my profile has 13000 gamer points on it from burnt games. will i have to create a diff profile? and i wanted to know how far the xbox live wireless adapter reaches too.
